Honore de Balzac and Gustave Flauberts Writings on...
Honore de Balzac and Gustave Flauberts Writings on Capitalism The Revolution in France, during the 19th century, gave power to the people for the first time in France. French citizens now had faith that they could form a strong, independent country; but what they did not realize was that there must be some form of financial or monetary backbone present for a country to excel on its own in the modern world. This gave way to the rise of capitalism and all its follies, debaucheries, and mainly the exploitive nature it excites in people. Two authors, who were writing and observing these changes during this time in France, Honore de Balzac, and Gustave Flaubert, exemplify the demoralization of a people caused by the onslaught ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Eugeneââ¬â¢s actions are exploitive because he has no regard for the well-being of his family by asking for their life-savings. Eugene also does not take into account how he is going to recover the sums he unethically acquires. However, capitalismââ¬â¢s influence does not stop with Eu gene in this instance. The idea of needing expensive clothes and flashy attire influences his sister Laura that she should use her sewing and clothes making skills in order to save Eugene some money, and therefore have a better chance of Parisian high society accepting him. Eugene says that his sister has ââ¬Å"become as crafty as a thiefâ⬠(87), which comments on the changes within her caused by the minute exposure to modern, capitalistic, ideals. However, really Laura is stealing from herself by willingly exploiting her own labor without compensation of any sort. Here, along with the ever-present portrayal of Goriotââ¬â¢s daughters bamboozling him for money, Balzac illustrates the most pathetic and demoralizing form of exploitation: when one exploits or unfairly takes advantage of their own family in a way that can lead them to starvation or even death. Pere Goriot and Eugene are not only involved with family exploitation, but they are also taking advantage of each other in hopes of gaining

Digital Piracy and Jewish Law Essay - 2268 Words
The rapid development of technology over the past few centuries has certainly left an impact on the world of halachaà ¸ or Jewish Law. Poskim, the formulators of the halacha, have had to make decisions on a variety of topics to accommodate fast-paced advancements in areas ranging from travel (When does one crossing the International Date Line celebrate a holiday?) to home appliances (Under what circumstances may one use a refrigerator on the Sabbath?). One issue that has been particularly relevant in recent years is that of digital piracy. The ubiquity of personal computers, the Internet, and the spread of peer-to-peer programs like Napster and BitTorrent have made a never-ending stream of media accessible to many Orthodox Jews.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Shiyur In an article published in Techumin, an Israeli halachic journal, Rabbi Zalman Nehemiah Goldberg, rosh yeshiva of Sadigua and the Jerusalem College of Technology, deals with a particular set of questions involving the legality of making unauthorized copies of audio cassettes. To answer these questions, Rabbi Goldberg writes a detailed analysis of a novel approach to the issue of copyright: shiyur. To understand the legal concept of shiyur, Rabbi Goldberg describes a case from the Talmud. This case involves a person who gives a coin to a poor man, stating that he may only buy a shirt with the money. The poor man is not legally permitted to purchase anything other than a shirt. The Talmud explains that this case is an application of the rule of ââ¬Å"whoever violates the wishes of the [original] owner is considered a thiefâ⬠(Bava Metzia 78a). But what exactly is the poor man stealing? Rabbi Goldberg first presents the possibility that he is stealing the coin, as he only acquires the money on the condition that he will buy a shirt with it. Once that condition is not fulfilled, the acquisition is retroactively undone, making the poor man a thief. Rabbi Goldberg rejects this possibility on technical grounds that are beyond the scope of this paper. Rabbi Goldberg concludes that when the poor man buys something other than a shirt, he is actually stealing the right toShow MoreRelatedThe Censorship of Art Essay example14698 Words à |à 59 Pagesand rock music since the founding of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) in 1985. These principles are called ââ¬Å"Seven Cââ¬â¢sâ⬠, these are completeness, conciseness, consideration, concreteness, clarity, courtesy, and correctness. The Seven Cââ¬â¢s are as follows: 1) Completeness Message Receiver- either listener or reader, desire complete information to their question. e. g. suppose you are working with multinational company who is engaging with engineering goods, like A. C. Now let say one of your major customer wants some technical information regarding ââ¬Å"thermostatâ⬠(because he wants to convey the same to the end users). In this case you have to provide him complete information in a short span of time. If possible, provide him some extra information which he does not know, in this way you can maintain a good business relation with him, otherwise he may switch to another company. Five Wââ¬â¢s: One way to make your message complete is to answer the five Wââ¬â¢s. â⬠¢? WHOâ⬠¢? WHATâ⬠¢? WHENâ⬠¢? WHEREâ⬠¢? WHY The five question method is useful when you write requests, announcements, or other informative messages. For instance, to order (request) merchandise, make clear WHAT you want, WHEN u need it, WHERE it is to be sent. 2) Conciseness Conciseness means ââ¬Å"convey the message by using fewest wordsâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Conciseness is the prerequisite to effective business communication. â⬠As you know that all businessmen have very short time. Hence a concise message saves the time and expenses for both the parties. How to achieve the conciseness? For achieving the conciseness you have to consider the following. 1. Avoid wordy expression 2. Include only relevant material 3. Avoid unnecessary repetition. Avoid Wordy Expression E. g. Wordy: ââ¬â at this time. Instead of ââ¬Å"at this timeâ⬠you can just use only a concise word: ââ¬â NOW, Always try to use ââ¬Å"To the point Approachâ⬠in business scenario perspective. Include only relevant information â⬠¢? Always try to provide only relevant information to the receiver of the message. Letââ¬â¢s say one of your customers requested â⬠¢? For clients of the company o in reply you should provide simply list of clients at the panel of your company. o No need to provide detailed business information about client at all. â⬠¢? Observe the following suggestions to ââ¬Å"Include only relevant information. â⬠¢? Stick to the purpose of message Delete irrelevant words Avoid long introduction, unnecessary explanation etc. Get to the important point concisely. Avoid un-necessary Repetition Sometimes repetition is necessary for focusing some special issue. But when the same thing is said without two or three reasons, the message becom e wordy and boring. Thatââ¬â¢s why try to avoid Un-necessary repetition. Some ways to eliminate unnecessary words Use shorter name after you have mentioned the long once. e. g. Spectrum communications Private limited use spectrum. Use pronouns or initials E. . Instead of world trade organization use WTO or You can use IT for Information Technology. (Keeping in views that receiver knows about these terms) 3. Consideration Consideration means ââ¬â To consider the receiverââ¬â¢s Interest/Intention. It is very important in effective communication while writing a message you should always keep in mind your target group consideration is very important ââ¬Å"Câ⬠among all the seven Cââ¬â¢s. Three specific ways to indicate consideration â⬠¢? Focus on ââ¬Å"youâ⬠instead of ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Weâ⬠â⬠¢? Show audience benefit or interest of the receiver â⬠¢? Emphasize positive, pleasant facts. Using ââ¬Å"youâ⬠help you, but over use lead a negative reaction. Always write a message in such a way how audience should be benefited from it. â⬠¢? We attitude: ââ¬Å"I am delighted to announce that we will extend to make shopping more. â⬠â⬠¢? You attitude: ââ¬Å"You will be able to shop in the evening with the extended hours. â⬠Readers may react positively when benefit are shown to them. Always try to address his/her need and want. Always show/write to readerâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ what has been done so far as his/her query is concerned. And always avoid that his/her need and wants. Always avoid that has not been done so far. 4. Concreteness It means that message should be specific instead of general. Misunderstanding of words creates problems for both parties (sender and receiver). When you talk to your client always use facts and figures instead of generic or irrelevant information. The following guidelines should help you to achieve the Concreteness. â⬠¢? Pauls Letter To The Galatians Essays (1316 words) - Christianity
Paul's Letter To The Galatians The Unkindest Cut of All: The Role of Circumcision in the Christian Church The expansion of the Christian church in Galatia was an extraordinary feat that few men could have completed successfully. The daunting task of spreading the church and then keeping it running was left to one of the most pious men of that era, Paul. His letters illustrate the difficulty of dealing with the newcomers to the Christian religion. From answering technical questions about the second coming of Christ to attempting to resolve the problems the new Christians were having with pagan ministries, Paul certainly had his hands full in Galatia. One of the main problems Paul had in Galatia was the appearance of Jewish Christians, who told the Gentile Christians that they were required to be circumcised. To Paul, this was a threat to the way of life he had prescribed to the Gentile Christians. So it came to be that the center of all the controversy in Galatia revolved around an ancient ritual. Pauls path to God, and the fate of Gentile Christianity, teetered in the balance of the unki ndest cut of all. The first subject Paul wished to address in his Letter to the Galatians was his legitimacy as a missionary in the name of God. He reviews his past as a Jew and recounts his days of persecuting the Christian church. Paul believes that if the Galatians remember who he once was, they will decide that if one of the false teachers own defected to Christianity, then perhaps they were correct in following Paul, the converted Jew. Paul continues his lecture on how he is a legitimate carrier of the message of the Lord by stating that he recognized, the favor bestowed (Gal. 2:8) upon him by the Lord. Paul is clearly restating his role in the evolution of the Christian church to underscore his righteousness in the eyes of the Lord. This is more than ample proof for the Galatians that Paul is the carrier of the true message. Paul wrote his scathing Letter to the Galatians to reinforce the teachings he had presented there during his second missionary journey. He intended to illustrate to the Galatians that there was a strong dividing line in the Christian faith between the law and the Spirit contained in them through Jesus Christ. As it turns out, Jewish Christians had visited Galatia in the absence of Paul and preached to the Gentile Christians about their Christian duty to receive and follow Jewish law, which included circumcision. Paul saw this as undermining his central Christian theme of focusing on the Spirit rather than the laws of man. By submitting to these false teachers, whom Paul believes has cast a spell over them (the Galatians), (Gal. 3:1) they would be returning to the days when they were, slaves to gods who are not really divine. (Gal. 4:8) Paul sought to restore the Galatians faith in his teachings by showing them that they were incorrect in believing that they could finish in the flesh what they began in the Spirit. Paul begins by asking a simple question, how did you receive the Spirit? (Gal. 3:2) Paul asks again, Did you receive it through the law or through faith in what you heard? Of course, the Galatians received the blessing of Christ through the Spirit and therefore have no duty to follow the laws that the Jewish Christians had prescribed. Paul goes on the remark that, All who depend on observance of the laware under a curse. (Gal. 3:10) Paul again emphasizes this when he states, no one is justified in Gods sight by the law. (Gal. 3:11) What Paul is stating here is that the path that the law provides is not the way to eternal life. Heaven cannot be attained through strict observance of the law alone. One must realize that the true path to the Kingdom is through faith. Paul illustrates this through the Book of Genesis, Chapter 15 Verse 6, where it states; Abram put his faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. Paul further explain s this by quoting Genesis, Chapter 15 Verse 6, where it states, Abram

Throughout literary history, certain authors are so unique and fresh in their approach to the written word that they come to embody a genre. Franz Kafka is one such author; ââ¬Å"The Metamorphosisâ⬠is one of his works that helped coin the term ââ¬Å"Kafkaesque.â⬠Through this novel, Kafka addresses the timeless theme of people exploiting others as a means to an end. The Dagenham Womens Strike of 1968
The Dagenham Women's Strike of 1968 Nearly 200 female workers walked out of the Ford Motor Co. plant in Dagenham, England, during the summer of 1968, protesting their unequal treatment. The Dagenham womens strike led to widespread attention and important equal pay legislation in the United Kingdom. Skilled Women The 187 Dagenham women were sewing machinists who made seat covers for the many cars produced by Ford. They protested being placed in the unions B grade of unskilled workers when men who did the same level of work were placed in the semi-skilled C grade. The women also received less pay than men, even men who were also in the B grade or who swept the factory floors. Eventually, the Dagenham womens strike stopped production entirely, since Ford was unable to sell cars without seats. This helped the women and the people watching them realize how important their jobs were. Union Support At first, the union did not support the women strikers. Divisive tactics had often been used by employers to keep male workers from supporting an increase in womens pay. The women of Dagenham said that union leaders did not think much about losing a mere 187 womens union dues out of thousands of workers. However, they remained steadfast and were joined by 195 more women from another Ford plant in England. The Results The Dagenham strike ended after Secretary of State for Employment Barbara Castle met with the women and took up their cause to get them back to work. The women were awarded a pay increase, but the re-grading issue was not resolved until after another strike years later, in 1984, when they were finally classified as skilled workers. Working women throughout the UK benefited from the Dagenham womens strike, which was a precursor to the UKs Equal Pay Act of 1970. The law makes it illegal to have separate pay scales for men and women based on their sex. The Movie The film Made in Dagenham, released in 2010, stars Sally Hawkins as the leader of the strike and features Miranda Richardson as Barbara Castle.
